Introduction: Inguinal hernia is a surgical condition that is encountered by surgeons all over the world. The patients present to the surgical outpatient department with the complaint of swelling in the inguinal region or the groin. Today, the surgery can be done either through the open technique or through the laparoscopic technique. In laparoscopic hernia repair, the two ways to do the procedure is either the totally extraperitoneal (TEP) or the transabdominal preperitoneal repair (TAPP). Materials and Methods: This was a prospective study that was carried out from March 2017 to February 2019, for a period of two years. The study was conducted at SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Kattankulathur, Tamil Nadu, India. A detailed history was collected and a thorough clinical examination was done. Investigations such as complete blood count (CBC), chest x-ray, ECG and ultrasound abdomen were done. In our study, we have only included patients who underwent laparoscopic totally extraperitoneal repair (TEP). A total of 62 patients were studied and the results obtained were tabulated. The statistics were analysed using SPSS package 16.0. Ethical clearance was obtained from the institutional ethics committee. Results: From our study, it was found that out of a total of 62 patients, 33 patients underwent totally extraperitoneal (TEP) repair and the procedure was completed in less than 60 minutes in 32.25% of them. 40.32% of patients in the TEP group stayed in the hospital for less than 3 days. It was also found that 29.03% of patients in the TEP group were able to return to their routine work in less than 10 days. Conclusion: Our study shows that in patients who underwent laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair and in particular using the TEP technique, there was significantly less post-operative pain, the patients stayed in the hospital for a shorter period of time and the patients also returned to their routine work earlier. The study thus shows the importance and the advantages of the totally extraperitoneal (TEP) technique for the repair of inguinal hernia over the traditional open method.
