Background: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a standard gold surgery for gall bladder stone disease, but conversion in laparoscopic to open cholecystectomy in some cases is inevitable. This retrospective study is helpful to know about the risk factors which are responsible for the conversion of laparoscopic to open cholecystectomy, like Conversion of laparoscopic to open cholecystectomy increases morbidity and cost.
Methods: We reviewed 532 laparoscopic cholecystectomies initiated between January 2017 and Jan 2020 in a surgery department, and in between duration statistical analysis was performed to identify preoperative and intraoperative risk factors for conversion from laparoscopic to open cholecystectomy.
Results: In 532 patients, 16 patients converted into open cholecystectomy. The overall rate of conversion to over cholecystectomy was 3.0%. Major factors responsible for conversion were difficult calot,s triangle identification (46.6%) and upper abdominal surgery (25%), which are statically significant.
Conclusion: Study of these factors help in the decision of selection of patient, the approach to surgery and counselling of patients. It also reduces the cost and time of surgery.
