: Impossible mask ventilation in a patient with facial burns: role of awake fiberoptic intubation

Abstract

Mask ventilation is the most basic and the most essential step in airway management. Patients with difficult intubation is a great challenge to anaesthesiologist & becomes more challenging if associated with difficult mask ventilation too. Anaesthesiologists should have knowledge of difficult mask ventilation and alternative techniques when mask ventilation becomes difficult or impossible. The safest approach in these patients is to plan for awake fiberoptic intubation. We hereby present a case of a patient with facial burns posted for skin grafting & flap cover , managed successfully with awake nasal fiberoptic intubation.
