Melatonin attenuates drug induced liver injury caused by combined effect of methotrexate and isoniazid

Abstract

Objective: To investigate the shielding effect of melatonin in drug induced liver injury (DILI) by isoniazid (INH) and methotrexate (MTX).
Methodology: This experimental study was performed at Department of Pharmacology, Army Medical College, Rawalpindi from November 2015 to November 2016. Thirty-six Balb/c male mice were split into 6 groups (n=6). Two groups (A1 and A2) served as controls for MTX and INH treated mice. Group B and C received MTX and INH, respectively. Group D received INH and MTX. Group E received INH and MTX along with melatonin. Serum liver enzymes and liver histological slides were taken after 24 hours of last dose.
