Radiodermatitis

Dr Sheraz Jamal Khan.

Abstract

This female patient presented with this lesion. She was diagnosed of Hodgkin’s Disease,
Stage IA with the histological picture of mixed cellularity. It was treated by external
beam irradiation by an oncologist. After the first treatment, she developed severe itching
and scaling followed by sloughing and edema of the neck. It was followed with
development of exuding sinuses and pyoderma.
The condition was diagnosed as Radiodermatitis with secondary infection. Pus culture
and sensitivity led to growth of Staphylococcus aureus sensitive to Fucidic Acid. The
infection responded well to oral fucidic acid. The radiation dermatitis responded to
abstinence from radiotheraphy as treatment was switched to chemotheraphy by the
oncologist.
