Ravindra Kumar and Amit Kumar.

Abstract

The present study aimed to maximize the semen output from rams using oxytocin or prostaglandin F2α (PG F2α) as well as to study the effects of these treatments on quality, freezability and antioxidant activity of ram semen. In the present work, 3 groups (each containing 6 Chhotanagpuri Ram) were used as; control (group 1) injected with normal saline intramuscularly (i.m.) 30 min. prior to semen collection, group 2 injected with 8 i.u. oxytocin intravenously (i.v.) 10 min. prior to semen collection, group3 injected with prostaglandin F2α0.1mg/kg body weight to each ram i.m. 30 min. before semen collection, Two collections per week per ram were taken for five weeks. A total of ten collections from each ram was taken thus, a total of 60 collections from the three rams were taken and evaluated. Average scrotal circumference in rams was found to be 22.33±0.30 and 22.33±0.22 cm in oxytocin and prostaglandin groups, rrespectively. Non-significant positive correlation of scrotal circumference with mass activity and sperm concentration were observed.

Key words: Chhotanagpuri, oxytocin, prostaglandin, ram, semen
