Health Status Evaluating Via Perceived Health and GHQ-12 Among Students of Three High Schools of Kocaeli University, 2007

Abstract

AIM: The study’s aim was to obtain health status and the related factors among higher schools’ students in Kocaeli.
METHOD: The study was cross-sectional design. Population of the study was the students graduated 2006-2007 semester in Kocaeli University’s three vocational high schools in Gölcük, Kocaeli. Participation rate was 89.3% (n:536). Data were collected by a questionnairre (75 items) and General Health Questionnaire(12 items) (GHQ–12).
RESULTS: Of the students, %34.7 had average or below score according to perceived health scale. GHQ scores were mean 3.3±3.2; 49.9% student had at least two psychological symptoms. Socioeconomic variables were more related with perceived health than psychological health measured by GHQ–12. Smoking was unexpectecly associated with better psychological status.
CONCLUSION: Comprehensive and accessible health service should be delivered to the university students, they make the important proportion of the country population.
