Abstract | | | | The existence of sulphur in heavy crude oil introduces several tasks due to its destructive, environmental and economic effects, as well as human health. This study is aimed at reducing the content of sulphur in heavy crude oil by oxidative desulfurization process by using Fenton’s reagent as
oxidant and formic acid catalyst (Fe2++H2O2/HCOOH). The oxidized crude oil sample was extracted and further characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis. The analysis of the oxidized oil showed sulphur reduction of 29.00% and 29.48% at 60ºC and 80ºC respectively. Though, the
(FTIR) spectra revealed remnant sulphur in the crude oil. The different oxidation reaction results indicated that increase in reaction temperature condition slightly increases oxidation reaction. Also dimethyl-sulphoxides were found to be a weak solvent for extraction of oxidized-sulphur, meanwhile, it leads to additional sulphur into the oxidized oil.
