Extent of Private Schooling in Kerala: Some Insights from DISE Data

Abstract

In the context of surge in academic engagements over increasing privatization of school education in the country, this paper examines the nature and extent of private schooling in the State of Kerala. In the absence of any realistic estimates on private schools and enrollments in them, this paper makes use of the raw data from District Information System for Education (DISE) for academic year 2016-17 to provide an over view of the schooling landscape in Kerala. It points towards rapid increase in enrollments in private schools across the State though regional disparities exist. It suggests for a more nuanced understanding of the reasons behind the increasing popularity of the private schools and its impacts on the issues of equity and inclusion in education.
