Improvement in Monitoring of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (dm) Done by Family Medicine Teams After Implementation of Dm Flowcharts

Abstract

Background: Quality of diabetes mellitus control practiced by doctors in Primary Health Care is suboptimal. Aim: To analyze the documentation of standard parameters for monitoring DM type 2 before and after implementation of special flowcharts for diabetic patients managed by Family Medicine Teams in Zenica. Methods: Research was conducted as chart audit within 19 Family Medicine Teams in Zenica. Each team gave us permission to include data from their charts in our study, although one individual (Family Medicine physician) refused to be included. We analyzed 853 charts, an average of 45 charts per team. Research was conducted between September 2007 and January 2008. In September 2007 we informed the Family Medicine Teams about the aim of our study and ways of collecting data from their charts. The data was collected from two years before and two years after the implementation of flowcharts for DM. Results: The use of standard parameters (all 14) before implementation of DM flowcharts was low.
