Objective: To compare Absolute eosinophil count (AEC), IgE and Eosinophil derived neurotoxin (EDN) between severe persistent asthmatic and non-asthmatic adults and to find the correlation of EDN with AEC and Forced Expiratory Volume (FEV) in severe persistent asthmatic patients.
Methodology: This cross sectional study was carried out at the Department of Chemical Pathology, University of Health Sciences Lahore, Pakistan. Pre diagnosed 32 severe persistent asthmatic patients and 32 ages and gender matched non-asthmatic adults were enrolled in the study. Their lung function data and blood samples for the assessment of AEC, IgE and EDN were collected. Pair wise comparisons between two groups were performed by Mann-Whitney U test.
Results: AEC in severe persistent asthmatic patients (546±411 /ul) was significantly higher than non-asthmatic adults (125±64/ul). Serum IgE (845.3±334.3 IU/L) and EDN (34881±12321ng/ml) were also high in severe persistent asthmatic patients than non-asthmatic adults (p
