Objective: To compare the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) amongst pre- menopausal and post-menopausal women according to NCEP: ATPIII & International Diabetes Federation (IDF) criteria.
Methodology: This cross-sectional study was done on a sample of 278 (147 premenopausal & 131 postmenopausal) women (25 years and above) presenting to the Outpatient Department of Liaquat University Hospital, Hyderabad from February to October 2020. We used a structured interview-based questionnaire containing inquiries pertaining to basic biodata, sociodemographic details and menstrual history. All anthropometric measurements along with visceral & body fat level were calculated using measuring tape & OMRON BfF508. Data were analyzed using SPSS 23.
Results: Cumulative MetS prevalence was 63.7% and 57.6% according to IDF (WC80 diagnostic criteria) and NCEP ATP-III classifications, respectively. Prevalence of MetS in premenopausal, was 24.5% according to IDF criteria and 21.24% according to ATP-III, criteria. Among postmenopausal, prevalence of MetS was 39.2% according to IDF criteria, and 36.36 according to NCEP ATP-III criteria.
Conclusion: MetS is more common among post-menopausal women. It is also observed in pre-menopausal women at alarming rates. IDF suggests significantly higher prevalence of MetS in participants as compared to ATP III criteria.
