Awareness and knowledge of rheumatology subspecialty among clinical students in a Nigerian medical school

Background: Rheumatology is a dynamic medical speciality with over 200 diagnoses and syndromes. There has been little or no emphasis on emphasis on rheumatology education in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa despite the increasing burden of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases globally.

Objectives: The study aims to assess the awareness of clinical students to rheumatology as a subspecialty, and also to evaluate their knowledge of rheumatology.
Methods: Anonymized self-administered questionnaire to evaluate the awareness and knowledge of rheumatology speciality was administered to 200 clinical students from fourth to final year in Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, South-south Nigeria after informed consent.
