Tertiary Prevention in Oral – Dental Health: Dental Prosthesis Materials

Wolfgang,H.,Koch.

Abstract

Nowadays preventive action and modern peridontic and endodontic methods make it possible to forego artificial teeth in favour of natural teeth. Nevertheless, if inadequate dental protheses or loss of teeth is unavoidable, the missing teeth have to be replaced by all means to restore chewing performance, not only on aesthetics grounds but also for health reasons. There is a close connection between chewing performance, nutrition and health. Target of biological dental care is to find a solution with less risk because a solution without any risk at all is utopian. The article discusses modern methods of treatment that are exemplary for perodontitis chronica and devital teeth as frequent reasons for lost teeth. Materials for artificial teeth looked at under the aspect of biocompatibility and minimum risk, with ceramics made of zirconium oxide are emphasised.

Key words: Dental prothesis, dental prothesis materials, dental applications
