Abstract

Objectives: The main aim of this research was to carry out the validity and reliability study of the Turkish version of the Body Esteem Scale.
Method: The sample of the study consisted of 459 volunteers studying at a public university's Faculty of Dentistry and Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences located in izmir. Data were collected using the Body Esteem Scale (BES), Body Cathexis Scale (BCS), Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale (RSES) and the Demographic Information Form which questioned the Body Mass Index (BMI) and personal information of the participants.
Results: The internal consistency coefficient for the total BES score was found as 0.94 and test-retest reliability was found to be 0.74. In both exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, a three dimensional and well-fit model was found, which was also compatible with the original scale. In terms of criterion validity, it was determined that the total BES score positively correlated with BCS and RSES scores, while it was significantly and negatively associated with BMI.

Key words: Body esteem, body image, validity, reliability, standardization
