Vitamin D deficiency and its correlation with risk factors in patients visiting Rawalpindi Medical University, Pakistan

Abstract

Objective: To determine the vitamin D status in patients presenting in RMU allied hospitals.
Methodology: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 228 patients presenting in RMU allied hospitals, Rawalpindi from January to June 2019. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaire consisting of demographic details (age, gender, socioeconomic status) and related values including vitamin D levels, related factors including vitamin D supplementation, pregnancy and diseases that impair vitamin D absorption. Data were analyzed by SPSS version 23.
Results: Out of 228 individuals, 76 (33.3%) were male and 152 (66.7%) female. Majority of (about 60.1%) had deficient state of vitamin D levels. In our study, about 14.5 percent of the population had insufficient vitamin D levels.
Conclusion: Vitamin D deficiency was common and was more common in females.
