A number of fetal anomalies may occur during the development of the thyroid gland. Ectopic thyroid is a congenital pathology caused by abnormal migration of thyroid tissue and has a prevelance of approximately 1 in 100,000 to 300,000 births. It can be found anywhere between the base of tongue and trachea except the pretracheal localization which is the normal place of thyroid gland.
Imaging techniques including ultrasonography (USG) and scintigraphy help in confirming the diagnosis. The most common presentation is a mass on the anterior neck in an euthyroid state. We present a case of a 40 year old female who presented with a painless mass measuring 1.5 cm by 2 cm of the left lateral neck, anterior to the corpus of the hyoid bone . The patient had biochemical and thyroid function tests within normal range and was admitted with complaints of dysphagia and globus sensation. The patient did not develop any post-operative complications after total excision of the mass. Normal thyroid follicular cells were observed in histopathological examination of the specimen, indicative of ectopic thyroid tissue. There was no evidence of malignancy. We present an unusual case of ectopic thyroid tissue in the presence of normal anatomic thyroid gland.
