Comparison of Oxidative stress biomarkers between Peste des petits Ruminants’ infected and non-infected goats in Ibadan, Nigeria.

Background and Aim: Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) is an economically important clinical disease of small ruminants in Nigeria with it devastated socio-economic consequences. Data on extent of derangement in the levels of oxidative stress biomarkers in PPRV infected goats have not been well established among Nigerian indigenous goats. This study establishes and compares the levels of biomarkers of oxidative stress parameters in Peste des Petits Ruminants virus (PPRV)-infected and non-infected goat breeds in Nigeria.
Method: Blood samples were aseptically collected through the jugular veins of goats manifesting clinical symptoms of PPR using plain sterile test tubes. Test was carried out to confirm the PPR diagnosis using the SZ FINDE® PPRV Antibody Rapid Test kit following the manufacturer's procedure. Sera were harvested and then stored at -20°C until analyzed for oxidative stress biomarkers using standard methods.
Results: Findings reveal 29.6% positivity and 70.4% negativity to PPRV in all goats sampled. Increased levels of serum oxidants, including malondialdehyde, hydrogen peroxide, and advanced oxidation protein products in PPRV-infected compared to non-infected with p-values of 0.000773, 0.023219, and 0.001261, respectively were observed. Whereas significant decreased in serum Glutathione S-transferase in PPRV-infected compared to non-infected goats with 0.023 ± 0.0032 and 0.027 ± 0.0066, respectively, with a p-value of 0.015037 was observed.
Conclusion: Red Sokoto breed, female and young goats, showed more positivity for PPRV compared to other breeds, male and adult’s goat respectively. Significant variations were recorded, with the infected group showing higher MDA, H2O2, and AOPPs levels and lower NO concentration.
