Objectives: To screen the multiple drug resistance (MDR) Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) from the urban area of Namakkal district. To detect UPEC resistant by using different antibiotics. Analyzing the virulent characteristics of UPEC and amplification of ESBL genes by multiplex PCR. Methods: 450 urine samples were collected from the patients individually, followed by direct streaked on the EMB agar plates and incubated at 37 °C for 24 hours. significant growth indicates the E.coli. HiCrome UTI agar was used for rapid identification of uropathogenic E. coli. Results: Out of 450 samples only 62 isolates of E. coli were subjected to virulence characteristics like slime production (34%), hemolytic activity (56%), beta-lactamase production (43%). Antibiotic sensitivity test performed with 13 different antibiotics. Among the 62 isolates of E. coli, only 5 isolates were resistant to 10 antibiotics and possess virulence characters. Four strains (E-12, E23, E-58, E-97) have TEM, SHV and CTX-M antibiotic resistance genes, E-07 have only CTX-M gene. Conclusion: E. coli is the main infectious agent in patients with UTI and a potent pathogen, it was difficult to treat with routine antibiotics. Because day-by-day microbes are resisting to common drugs. So, need alternative therapy.
