Abstract

Background: Allergic Rhinitis (AR) can be associated with Vataja Pratishyaya in Ayurveda and affects 20–30% of the Indian population, significantly impairing quality of life. While conventional management usually involves avoiding allergens, antiinflammatories, and antihistamines, Ayurveda offers immunomodulatory and local therapies. Objective: To evaluate and compare the efficacy of oral Haridrakhanda alone versus oral Haridrakhanda administered in combination with Anu Taila Nasya (nasal instillation) in alleviating the clinical symptoms and immunological markers of Allergic Rhinitis. Methods:This randomised, controlled, parallel-group clinical trial will recruit 144 eligible participants (aged 18–60) with a Total Nasal Symptom Score (TNSS) ≥6. Participants will be randomised into two groups of 72. Group A will receive Haridrakhanda (6g twice daily) orally, and Group B will receive oral Haridrakhanda (same dosage) combined with Anu Taila Nasya (2 drops per nostril daily) for 28 days. The efficacy of the trial will be assessed using TNSS as the primary outcome, with Serum IgE and Absolute Eosinophil Count (AEC) as secondary outcomes. Assessments will occur at baseline, day 28 (end of treatment), and day 56 (follow-up). Expected Outcomes: Data will be analysed using t-tests or Mann–Whitney U tests for continuous variables. The study anticipates that the dual approach (Group B), will demonstrate superior efficacy in reducing the symptoms of AR and immunological markers compared to oral therapy alone. Conclusion: This trial seeks to validate a synergistic Ayurvedic protocol for AR. If successful, it will provide evidence for an integrative management strategy addressing both Doshic imbalance and mucosal hypersensitivity.
