The increasing severity of the climate crisis and environmental problems has led to a reassessment of industrialization and development policies, and a focus on the concept of eco-development. Thus, with the growing importance of environmental issues in the 21st century, eco-development has become a prominent element in the role of the state in shaping industrial policies. In this context, research into East Asia, one of the world's most populous regions where national income and resource use have increased most rapidly since World War II, but where environmental degradation has also intensified, is crucial. Therefore, this study first analyzes the environmental pollution caused by the developmental states of East Asia—Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and China—during their development, within the context of the Environmental Kuznets Curve, and then attempts to determine the extent to which they have progressed from pro-state developmental policies to pro-environmental policies.

Key words: Developmental State, Eco-Developmental State, Economic Development, Environmental Kuznets Curve, East Asian Countries. JEL Codes: O57, O56, O10, Q56, O53.
