A comprehensive review of mud eel Monopterus cuchia aquaculture in Bangladesh: Current trends, opportunities, and challenges

The freshwater mud eel (Monopterus cuchia) of Bangladesh has high demand in the international market and it posses great economic potential. Therefore, mud eel farming has steadily become one of the most promising aquaculture industries in Bangladesh, providing small-scale farmers with financial advantages. However, mud eel farming in Bangladesh is still in its early stages compared to other established aquaculture industries and often confined to traditional methods. The mud eel business in Bangladesh is mainly depends on natural capture. Due to the increasing pressure on wild population, the production of mud eel from different waterbodies and its contribution to total fish production has declined over the years. Therefore, this review article synthesizes existing research reports and data from various regions of the country focusing on the current trends of mud eels culture in Bangladesh, including the potential for increasing domestic production. Furthermore, this article will discuss the challenges to offer a more sustainable and resilient approach to mud eel production. The challenges faced by mud eels aquaculture in Bangladesh will be critically examined, with particular emphasis on the need for better seed production techniques and stronger market linkages. Policy support, research investment, and extension services are essential for addressing these challenges and fostering the growth of this sector. This review will provide a detailed roadmap for stakeholders, policymakers, and researchers to enhance the sustainability and profitability of mud eel farming in the country.
