Abstract

The study assessed pesticide usage by farmers in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, Nigeria. A total of 125 farmers were randomly selected and data were collected through structured questionnaire on socio-economic characteristics and the awareness on pesticide usage by the farmers. Data collected were analyzed using frequency and percentage. The study revealed that majority of the respondents (40%) are within the age category of 36-45 years, mostly (76%) married and literate (92%). They practice agriculture at a subsistence level with varied farming experience. A substantial majority of the farmers (92%) are aware of pesticides which is sourced mainly from agrochemical shops. Financial constraints and inadequacy of expert advice on pesticides use and application procedures are major hindrances to pesticide usage by the respondents. Findings from the study suggests the need for Government intervention in provision of pesticides at subsidized rates. There should also be regular training of farmers by extension agents with specialized skills in pesticide handling and application. This will improve agricultural productivity, prolong the lives of the farmers and make the environment safer.

Key words: Pesticide Usage, Food security, Agricultural productivity, Extension Agents.
