ORAL GENODERMATOSES: A REVIEW

Abstract

Genodermatoses are a group of dermatological disorders with single gene mutation. The path of inheritance in a family is determined by single mutant gene. Most of these disorders exhibit multisystem involvement with high morbidity and mortality. Oral Genodermatoses (OG) are inherited dermatological disorder with oral manifestations. oral mucosa, tongue, gingiva, palate, dentition and salivary glands are affected. This refers special attention as sometimes it may be the only presenting sign of the disease. This article gives idea about oral manifestations of these genetic disorders and its classification. It is important for the dental surgeon to have a knowledge on OG as it may be the first clue to an underlying genetic diagnosis as some of the OG shows pre-malignant lesions. It is essential that these are appropriately recognized to provide correct diagnosis and prognosis.
