Enhancing basic life support knowledge in staff nurses through structured teaching: Findings from Cuttack hospitals

Basic life support (BLS) is a critical set of life-saving intervention that can significantly increase the chances of survival following cardiac arrest or other life-threatening emergencies. It includes timely and effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), airway management, and defibrillation with an automated external defibrillator (AED). For healthcare professionals, especially staff nurses who are often the first responders in hospital settings, proficiency in BLS is essential. The main objective of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a structured teaching program on knowledge regarding basic life support among staff nurses working in a selected hospital, Cuttack. This study uses a quantitative, pre-experimental, one-group pre-test and post-test design, conducted at Padmini Care Hospital, Cuttack, Odisha. A purposive sampling technique was used to select 50 staff nurses for the study. The structured knowledge questionnaire was used to assess their knowledge. After receiving the intervention, there was a significant difference in the level of knowledge of staff nurses about basic life support (p < 0.001, highly significant), suggesting the effectiveness of the structured teaching program. The structured teaching program was effective in enhancing the knowledge level of staff nurses regarding basic life support.
