Risk factors of acute myocardial infarction in young adults of Nepalese population

Abstract

Background: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a leading cause of death throughout the world. CAD has been recognized among younger age group more frequently even in Nepal. The present study thus aims to estimate the serum apolipoprotein B (Apo B) and Apo A, and inflammatory biomarkers in young patients of acute myocardial infarction attending the tertiary care center of eastern Nepal.
Methodology: This was a hospital-based cross-sectional study conducted from August 2014 to July 2015. Thirty-eight patients aged 15-45 years presented with an acute myocardial infarction were enrolled. Eleven risk factors were studied in the study population. The study population was further divided into two groups: Group A: 35 years of age or less and Group B: 36-45 years of age.
Results: Majority of the subjects were hypertensive with the history of smoking and alcohol intake. Serum Apo B was significantly raised as compared to the Apo A in the study population with serum hsCRP and uric acid being significantly higher in Group B as compared to Group A patients.
Conclusion: This study concludes that Apo B/Apo A-1 ratio is a better predictor of myocardial infarction in young adults as compared with the conventional lipid parameters and other biomarkers of inflammation (hsCRP and uric acid), respectively.
