Objective: To determine the factors causing failure in final examination among the medical students.
Methodology: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted from April to October 2017 at Rawal Institute of Health Sciences, Islamabad. Using non-probability convenience sampling technique, 100 students were interviewed and responses were recorded on a close ended questionnaire. Questions were related to the sixteen different variables that contributed towards failure in final examination. Responses were noted as agree, disagree and neutral.
Results: The agreed to responses towards sixteen failure contributing variables are; 64% poor attendance, 64% fear of failure, 84% poor time management, 60% excessive use of social media, 70% lack of preparedness, 36% study at eleventh hour, 46% habit of selective study, 84% unable to review entire syllabus, 50% poor peer relationship, 86% behavior of teachers, 76% lack of motivation, 56% internal assessment, 50% less parent involvement, 76% students poor health, 44% non-effective teaching methods, and 28% extracurricular activities.
Conclusion: Our study indicated multiple causes of failure among the medical students in the final examination. Importance of the academic failure of students and the negative consequences should be given due importance. More precise and elaborate studies on this topic be conducted so that appropriate strategies could be implemented in the institutes to rectify the problem.
