Substance Dependency in High School Students: Their Self Efficacy in Avoiding Drug Abuse and Affecting Factors

Abstract

Aim: In this study, it wasaimed to evaluate the high school students’ self-efficacy in terms of prevention from drug abuse and its prevention because of the increase in drug addiction, an important health problem in Turkey and in the World among young people, and the fact that drug abuse is becoming more common among children during primary education.
Method: There search included 22623 students (11210 males, 11413 females) in 37 highs chools in Sivas Provincial Center and 911 students (485 females, 426 males) were selected to participate in the study. The data were collected using Personal Information Form and The Drug Abuse Prevention Self-Efficacy Scale. Frequency distribution, variance analysis, Student's t test, Chisquare test, correlation analysis and logistic regression analysis were used in the analysis of the data.
Results: 38.7% of the students who participated in the study reported that they them selves were using a drug or substance or knew somepers using them. The substances used were cigarettes (32.8%), alcohol (6.8%), bonzai (2.1%), bally (1.6%) and . The means core of self-efficacy scale for students and those around them who had a history of drug abuse was 97.77 ± 19.39, while the score of self-efficacy scale for those with out that was 102.24 ± 18.51.
