Depression among day scholars and hostellites; A comparative cross sectional survey

Abstract
Objective: To determine the depression among day scholars and hostellites.
Methodology: In this comparative cross sectional survey, data were collected from female students of physical therapy of university who were day scholars and hostellites. Students who were consulting psychiatrist were excluded. Beck depression inventory scale was used to assess the depression.
Result: Mean age of 210 students 21.77±1.34 years. Out of day scholars, 14.83% were suffering in mild mood disturbance, 4.78% had borderline depression, 11.00% had moderate depression and 0.96% had severe depression. Out hostellites, 11.48% were suffering in mild mood disturbance, 5.26% had borderline depression, 15.31% had moderate depression, 3.83% had severe depression and 0.96% had extreme depression.
Conclusion: The incidence of depressive symptoms was higher in hostellites as compared to day scholars. It could be due to staying in a hostel or away from home.
