Objective: Investigate the relationship between alcohol consumption and the incidence of pyogenic liver abscess (PLA), an infectious disease caused by various pathogens.
Methods: This case report describes a 33-year-old male who had a fever of 39°C. His imaging examination found a large low-density area in the right lobe of the liver with an unclear border and vague surrounding fat gap. The blood culture was not positive; no aerobic nor anaerobic bacterial growth was noted
Results: the patient improved with drainage of the pyogenic liver abscess and continued medical treatment for 6 weeks. The patient was discharged home with Augmentin for 1 month successfully.
Conclusion: By reviewing this case and summarising the information about the characteristics, causes, and complications of PLA based on the literature review, we concluded that it is necessary to perform liver puncture drainage promptly and empirically use antibiotics for patients with PLA, to avoid serious complications such as septic shock, liver failure and portal vein thrombosis.
Key words: Liver abscess, pyogenic, Alcoholic.
