CAN ARIPIPRAZOLE CAUSE PARKINSON DISEASE? TWO CASES WITH ARIPIPRAZOLE INDUCED PARKINSONISM

Hülya Uluğut Erkoyun.

Abstract

The association between aripiprazole and Parkinsonism has not been well shown. Our patients’ present complaints started several weeks after the initiation of only aripiprazole. We present two female cases, who developed extrapyramidal syndrome (EPS) after administering aripiprazole. Both of them had never used any antipsychotic agent except aripiprazole and the EPS disappeared within almost a week after administration of the anticholinergic drug. This severe Parkinsonism is associated with aripiprazole in our cases. Our report emphasizes the need for careful monitoring for the development of Parkinsonian features in patients treated with aripiprazole.

Key words: Aripiprazole, Parkinsonism, Extrapyramidal Syndrome
