EFFECT OF METHYLPHENİDATE TREATMENT ON QUALİTY OF LİFE IN ADOLESCENTS

Abstract
İntroduction: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common childhood mental disorders. ADHD is associated with impairment in quality of life that is improved by ADHD treatment. This study was aimed to evaluate changes in quality of life and comorbid depression and anxiety symptoms after methylphenidate treatment.
Methods: 50 Cases between 13-18 years old who are ADHD diagnosed and treated with methylphenidate for three months, were included in study. Data were collected retrospectively. Scores of Children Depression Inventory, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children and Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory TM 4.0 (PedsQLTM 4.0) at the beginning of treatment and three months later were examined.
Results: After methylphenidate treatment, quality of life scores were improved except physical functioning. When compared with scores of parents, adolescents obtained higher scores. A more significant improvement observed in quality of life scores of males than females. In addition, depression and anxiety symptoms improved after methylphenidate treatment.
Conclusion: Evaluation of impacts of ADHD treatment on quality of life is important to observe treatment goals and constitute efficient and multidirectional treatment plan.
