Summary
Ergosterol is an economically important metabolite produced by yeast cells. In this study the production of ergosterol was investigated using batch and fed batch conditions. The production process was carried out in7 L bioreactor under optimized growth fermentation conditions involving growth medium containing the following constituents (g%) glucose 8, corn steep liquor 10, urea 0.1, KH2PO4 0.6, MgSO40.1, and NaNO3 0.2 ; pH 9 and inoculums size 3ml/100ml medium. The results showed significant increase in ergosterol production from 342 to488mg/l by increasing the agitation speed from 400 rpm to 600rpm. The fed batch studies showed that glucose feeding increases ergosterol productivity more than 80% under fed batch fermentation comparing to the batch fermentation. However, corn steep liquor feeding at conc. of 10g% gave the maximum amount of ergosterol (1253mg/l) during the exponential yeast growth phase.
