Relationship between affluenza, psychological wellbeing and life satisfaction among doctors and lawyers

Abstract
Objective: To find the outcome of affluenza (excessive love of money) among adults and mediating effect of stress, depression and anxiety. Affluenza is a tensed psychological condition of mind evolving from uncontrolled love for money and materialistic gains.
Methodology: In this cross sectionional survey, participants were approached in their offices. Data from 255 professionals, 119 females and 136 males was collected from different districts of Punjab. To examine the variables The Affluenza Self-diagnostic test (ASDT), Short Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale and Satisfaction with Life scale were administered.
Results: Affluenza was slightly more common in female (111.48±12.72) as compared to male (108.92±12.60). Doctors scored higher (111.82±12.22) on Affluenza as compared to lawyers (108.20±12.99) and male got higher scores (14.45±5.11 and 44.04±9.98) on wellbeing and life satisfaction respectively, as compared to female (12.13±3.50 and 40.60±8.25).
Conclusion: Affluenza may be one of the causes, which creates psychological and emotional distress leading towards decline in wellbeing among the doctors and lawyers of Pakistan. The desire of money, loving goods more than people, massive lust for materialistic gains, and greed far more badly affects the mental health of professional by developing various psychological symptoms like depression, anxiety and stress.
