Intra-articular administration of warm lignocaine enhances intraoperative analgesic quality

Abstract

Objective: To assess whether intra-articular administration of warm lignocaine would enhance intraoperative analgesic quality.
Material and methods: Our prospective, randomized and double blind study included 34 subjects, ASA I-II, aged 31-44 years, of both genders and scheduled for knee arthroscopy under local anesthesia at Queen Alia Military Hospital, Amman, Jordan, during the period Jan 2010 –Feb 2011.
Subjects were assigned into two groups. Group I subjects (n=14) received intra-articular 10 cc of lignocaine 2% added to 10 cc of normal saline, both of 25 °C temperature, and group II subjects (n=24) received intra-articular 10 cc of lignocaine 2 % added to 10 cc of normal saline ,both of 40 °C temperature,15 minutes preoperatively. Intraoperative visual analogue scale of pain was evaluated in both groups where 0 mm = no pain and 100 mm = worst pain.
