Effectiveness of WALC on schizophrenia spectrum disorders among elderly.

Abstract

Schizophrenia is a challenging disorder that makes it difficult to distinguish between what is real and unreal, think clearly, manage emotions, relate to others, and function normally. WALC is used to treat, W- Means walk it is not a walking group it is designed to provide information support and motivation to undertake walking independently and safely, A- Address sensations common exercise discomforts, L- Learn about exercise-Providing verbal, group instructions on exercise benefits and overcoming barriers to exercise, C-Cue exercise-Cue means exercise performedb independently and it was designed to address cognitive deficits common to person with schizophrenia spectrum disorders.
The study is done to evaluate the effectiveness of WALC on schizophrenia spectrum disorders among elders.
Quantitative research approach and Quasi experimental- pre test post test design was used. The study was conducted in Narayana medical College hospital (NMCH) in Nellore. The samples were elderly aged between 50-64 years diagnosed with schizophrenia spectrum disorder, and who fulfil the inclusion criteria. The sample size of 60 elderly were selected by using Non probability convenience sampling technique.
The study concludes that the elderly who were given the WALC intervention showed significant reduction in schizophrenia spectrum disorders.
