Abstract
The aim of this study is to evaluate the causes and the results of acute poisoning cases occurred in Şanlıurfa. Record books of emergency departments of State and Children Hospital from 1990 to 1996 in Şanlı/ifa were retrospectively investigated. Acute poisoning cases were evaluated with regard to sex, age, poisoning causes and results. Of total 2379 poisoning cases, 818 (34.4 %) were in childhood and 1561 (65.6 %) were in adolescents. The incidence of acute poisoning cases was 0.97 %. The most common poisoning causes were scorpion bites (42.9 %), drugs (18.7 %) and food (10.1 %). Death ratio was 1.26 % (30 in 2379 cases). The most common death causes were food (46.6 %) and drugs (16.6 %). Seventy percent of in death cases were children. The highest death ratio were in pesticide (7.1 %) and food (5.8 %) poisonings. The most common poisoning causes were scorpion bites, drugs and food in Şanlıurfa, in order of frequence. We believe that public education about poisonings, especially scorpion bite, by using mass media will decrease poisoning cases in our region.
