. Abstract | | | |
Health care workers are in increased risk of occupational acquisition of bloodborne pathogens. We screened the prevalence of HBV markers, anti-HCV and anti-HIV in health care workers in Turgut Ozal Medical Center. Sera from 382 healthy hospital personnel were tested for HBV serological markers, anti- HCV and anti-HIV by ELISA. As a result of evaluation of HBV serology, 15 (4%) of the cases were found to be carriers, 115 (30%) were immune, 65 (18%) were vaccinated and 187 (48%) were not exposed to HBV. Two cases was found to be positive for anti-HCV (0.5%). All cases were found negative for anti-HIV. The high number of cases exposed to HBV shows the importance of the use of universal precautions and aggressive vaccination programs in health care workers should be considered.
