Abstract

Intra-abdominai abscesses represent a relatively severe complication ¡n clinical practice owing to their association with high levels of morbidity and mortality. Ultrasound- guided (US-G) percutaneous catheter drainage Is useful both ¡n the diagnosis and in treatment of intra-abdomlnal abscesses. Indications for US-G percutaneus drainage depends on the localization and cause of the abscess.

Material and Methods: In this retrospective study (1993-1999) we evaluated 13 patients with abdominal abscesses. 11 patients were treated with ultrasound guided drainage.

Results: The drainage was technically successful in all of the patients and there was no procedure related complication. One patient was died because of severe pancreatitis and sepsis, overall mortality was 1/11 (9%).

Conclusions: Percutaneous drainage of intraabdom'mai abscesses is very effective intervention. This method reduces morbidity and mortality.
