Aim: To evaluate the gastric mucosal changes in rats in chronic ethanol intake with liquid diet.
Materials and Methods: In this study adult male Wistar rats were used. They were fed by a modified liquid diet containing %7,2 of ethanol for 180 days. The rats in the control group were also fed by the same liquid diet without alcohol. At the end of the experiment the rats were sacrified by cervical dislocation. Stomach was dissected, cut and fixed in Bouin’s solution. The sections were stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin, Masson’s trichrome, PAS (Periodic acid – Schiff) and Alcian blue–Kernechtrot staining techniques.
Results: Histochemical stainings demonstrated normal morphology in the control group. In alcohol group the parietal cells were increased. Additionally, local hemorragic areas and surface epithelial cellular exfoliations were observed. Surface epithelial cells and isthmus mucus cells were positive for PAS stain, whereas mucus cells of the neck of the glands were stained by Alcian blue-Kernechtrot, both in control and experimental groups.
Conclusion: It is suggested that mucosa of the stomach is sensitive to alcohol and alcohol causes gastric mucosal degenerations.
