Technical University Medical School Farabi Hospital
The problems needing surgical treatment are difficult to tolerate in the elderly. In this study the aim was requiring
to evaluate the elderly over 65 years who were operated in KTU Medical School Farabi Hospital.
6608 patients were operated in KTU Medical School Farabi Hospital in the year 2000. 16.3% of these operations
was emergent and 83.7% was elective. 14.8% of the emergent and 16.7% of the elective operations were
performed on the elderly over 65 years. The age difference between the emergency group (74.2 years) and elective
group (71.1 years) was statistically significant. General anesthesia was the most common anesthesia in the two
groups and more preferred in emergency operations. Most commonly General Surgery Department had
performed emergency operations and Urology Department elective ones. The most common causes of emegency
and elective operations were gallbladder pathologies and cancer respectively.
These results suggest once more that operations in the elderly needs more attention.
