Aim: There is a significant increase in motorcycle accidents along with increasing number of motorcyclists in metropols due to heavy traffic. As a result of tibial fracture analysis in motorcycle accidents, we planned to emphasize what to do in order to prevent these fractures.
Patients and Method: This retrospective study included 187 patients who were hospitalized for injuries caused by motorcycle accidents from March 2006 to March 2008. There were 43 cases with tibial fractures. Thirteen of them were open fractures and operated in emergency conditions, 30 cases were operated electively.
Results: Complete union was observed in 37 of cases with tibial fractures. Mean union time was 5.2 months. Infective pseudoarthrosis was seen in 2 patients and 4 cases developed shortness and varus deformity. Delay in healing was noted in 15% of tibial fractures. It was recorded that none of the patients had worn leg guards.
Conclusion: Since motorcycle accidents are preventable, educational programs should be improved for motorcyclists.
