Drug Expenditures in our Country

Abstract


Non-rational usage of drug is very important problem for all over the world. In our country, non-rational usage of drug is a serious problem and enhance the percent of medical cost in the health funds.  According to 2010 data of Turkish Pharmaceutical Industry Employers’ Association, the proportion of the prescription-drug costs decreased by 1.2% and reached to 13.9 billion TL (9.2 billion USD) in total drug costs, while sales of drugs in boxes increased by 2.8% and reached to 14.5 billion boxes, compared to the data of 2009. Drug consumption per person of 2011 was 133 dollars. Consequently, unnecessary drug use has become a problem in our country as a result of nonrational drug use of individuals, overuse of the counter drugs, and drug prescription more than required. High cost unnecessary drug use negatively affects country’s economy. Hence, new arrangements about drug waste should be developed.
