Analyzing students’ choices: Blackboard teaching vs. PowerPoint presentations

Abstract

Background:
PowerPoint presentation is a novel method of teaching used widely now a days. Still popularity of traditional chalk and board method remains the same among many teachers and students. Many researchers have noted that PowerPoint presentations often function as a one-way communication tool, which can quickly bore students. While chalk and board method was found more interactive and live.

Aim:
This study was designed to know the perceptions and preferences of the students for Chalk & board vs PowerPoint presentation method.

Methods:
This is an institution based cross-sectional study. Total 224 students participated in the study. They were taught same topic by same teacher for same duration of time on two different sessions conducted on different days. After completion of the sessions a questionnaire was given to the students. Score was calculated to compare both the methods.

Results:
Mean score of Chalk and board method was 37.4 ± 11.6 while mean score for PowerPoint method was 29 ± 11.3. This difference was statistically significant. 58.9% students preferred chalk and board method overall compared to 41.1% students preferred PowerPoint presentations.

Conclusion:
Chalk and board method is more preferred as compared to PowerPoint presentation.
