Abstract | | | | Background/aim: The aim of the study was to find the prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome among a group of university students and its associated factors.
Materials and methods: The data was collected via a qustionnairre based on Rome III criteria. The associated factors were analyzed with logistic regression analysis.
Results: The 13.2% of the students have Rome-III based irritable bowel syndrome. According to Beck Depression Inventory 11.0% students have depression. Female gender (OR[95%C.I.]) (2.7[1.7-4.2]), depression (2.9[1.9-4.5]) and studying in medicine (2.6[1.02-7.0]) were significant risk factors of irritable bowel syndrome.
Conclusions: Irritable bowel syndrome is common among university students. Students with gastrointestinal complaints who are female, studying medicine and have depression should be examined in terms of irritable bowel syndrome.
