Holding chambers (Spacers): Still underutilized in India

Gowrinath K.

Abstract

Holding chambers or spacer devices are tubular attachments to the pressurized metered dose inhaler (pMDI) mouthpiece. Spacer with valve holds the medication in its chamber after it has been released from the pMDI allowing the individual to breath in and out of mouth piece or face mask. Use of spacer can result in greatly reduced oropharyngeal drug deposition, higher lung deposition, and eliminate the hand lung co-ordination problem or cold freon effect reported with the use of pMDI. Spacer devices have proved to be very useful in the management of asthma particularly in children, old and debilitated individuals.

Key words: spacer devices, asthma
