In this edition of “Nigerian Journal of Psychiatry”, there are arrays of articles of interest not only to mental health care workers but medical
practitioners at large. Depression is an important psychopathology known to be common in the community; thus, Ajayi et al (2011) from Ibadan, South West Nigeria studied the knowledge of primary health care workers in the recognition and management of this illness. From llorin, North Central, Nigeria; Buhari et al (2011) examined the attitudes of medical students to psychiatry. The authors found a fairly positive attitude of the students to psychiatry even before and after their clinical rotation in the discipline. Ukpong et al (2011) studied the frequency and nature of physical aggression against mental health care workers by the mentally ill persons in mtwo pioneer psychiatric hospitals in Nigeria: Lagos and Calabar respectively. It was found that the mental health staff most especially psychiatric Nurses and Doctors had fair deal of violence from their patients. Comprehensive training in managing violent patients was recommended by the authors.
