COKER, A. O, LADAPO, H. T. O, LAWAL, R. A. AND MALOMO, I. O.

Abstract

Pseudocyesis or delusion of pregnancy refers to the condition of believing that one is pregnant despite factual evidence to the contrary and it
is accompanied by the classical symptoms of pregnancy. A pathological desire for pregnancy and conflicting attitudes regarding child
bearing have been implicated in the aetiology of delusion of pregnancy. We hereby present five cases of delusions of pregnancy which occurred over a period of six months at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Yaba, Lagos, Nigeria. We drew the attention of clinicians to this disorder which was once thought to be rare in the Nigerian society. The early diagnosis and treatment of women with this illness are important to prevent the psychosocial problems associated the disorder.
