Psychological Treatment for Stuttering, Do Nigerians Know About It?

Abstract

ABSTRACT
Background: Even though the prevalence of stuttering is high in Nigeria, and stuttering therapies have been around for a while, persons who stutter in Nigeria rarely consult psychotherapists and speech pathologists for treatment. One wonders why?
Methods: Through a survey, data was collected from2,129respondents from a university in the Eastern part of Nigeria. Percentages and the Chi Square were used for data analysis.
Result: It was found that a very significant percentage (72.8%) of respondents indicated that they did not
know that there is therapy (treatment) for stuttering.
Conclusion: The implications of this lack of awareness of stuttering treatment, and psychotherapy in general, were discussed
