Pteronophobia, a Rare Form of Specific Phobia Treated with Systematic Desensitization: A Case report.

Abstract

ABSTRACT
Background: Phobia is a type of
anxiety disorder characterized by a
s p e c i f i c, m a r ke d d r e a d o r
apprehension toward a certain thing
or scenario that exceeds the real risk
posed by the concerned object or
event. Globally, the prevalence of
specific phobias is higher among
children and adolescents; in Nigeria,
the prevalence is 6.4% among
adolescents. Pteronophobia is a
form of specific phobia characterized
by a morbid fear of feathers. We
highlighted the prevalence of
pteronophobia and indicated the
e f f i c a c y o f s y s t e m a t i c
desensitization.
Methods: This is a clinic-based
description of pteronophobia with
r e s p o n s e t o s y s t e m a t i c
desensitization.
Results: A 20-year-old female
undergraduate with pteronophobia,
with disabling effect, who responded
to systematic desensitization.
Relevant literature highlighted the
long-lasting outcome of systematic
desensitization.
Conclusion:We presented a case of
pteronophobia, its disabling effect on
the individual, and the long-lasting
e f f i c a c y o f s y s t e m a t i c
desensitization in managing the
disorder.
